Validation of PrioCHECK® Besnoitia Ab
Summary
Prionics AG has developed a new diagnostic tool (PrioCHECK® Besnoitia Ab) for the detection of antibodies against Besnoitia besnoiti in cattle. A validation study was carried out at the Institute of Parasitology, University of Bern, Switzerland and at the National Veterinary University of Toulouse, France. Sera of cattle were tested for the presence of anti-Besnoitia antibodies with the new ELISA kit. The sensitivity of the PrioCHECK® Besnoitia Ab was 97.8% (95% CI =93.6-100%). The specificity of the PrioCHECK® Besnoitia Ab was 98.1% (95% CI=95.6-100%). The PrioCHECK® Besnoitia Ab is a suitable diagnostic tool for the detection of antibodies against Besnoitia besnoiti in cattle. It has a very high sensitivity and a very high specificity.
Introduction
PrioCHECK® Besnoitia Ab is based on ELISA technology and can detect anti-Besnoitia antibodies in serum of cattle. The Institute of Parasitology, University of Bern, Switzerland and the National Veterinary University of Toulouse, France, have evaluated the performance of the PrioCHECK® Besnoitia Ab for the detection of anti-Besnoitia antibodies in serum samples of cattle. The PrioCHECK® Besnoitia Ab was compared with the visual observation of Besnoitia-cysts on the subconjuntiva and an in-house Western blot of the Institute of Parasitology, University of Bern, Switzerland
Conclusions
The sensitivity of the PrioCHECK Besnoitia® Ab was 97.8% (95% CI =93.6-100%). The specificity of the PrioCHECK Besnoitia® Ab was 98.1% (95% CI=95.6-100%)
The PrioCHECK® Besnoitia Ab is a suitable diagnostic tool for the detection of antibodies against Besnoitia besnoiti in cattle. It has a very high sensitivity and specificity.
ELISA-positive samples are recommended to be confirmed by Western-blotting (presently offered in Bern and Toulouse).
